A: It was a great idea to come here, wasn’t it, Josh?
B: Yeah, I love the fresh air, and the smell of all the trees around us.
A: The fire’s great too. It’s lovely just sitting here looking at the firelight.
B: Yeah, I wish we visited the countryside more often.
A: Did you know Mum bought some fresh strawberries, Michelle?
B: Mmm, I want some. I love strawberries. Where are they?
A: They’re here in the fridge. I’ll take them into the living room.
B: No, let’s eat them at the dining room table. We don’t want to make a mess.
A: That was nice of your mum to give us the money for these tickets.
B: It was a reward for doing well in my exams.
A: Good job, Leslie’
B: Thanks. Now let’s go inside and find our seats before the play starts.
A: The city looks beautiful fro’m up here, don’t you think?
B: Yeah, and it’s lovely to hear the river flowing under us, too. It’s quite noisy!
A; They’ve made it safe, though. Which is good.
B: Yes, it was a very good idea to keep the cars and the pedestrians separate. Let’s go across to the other side.
I’ve always loved books and I always knew I would end up surrounded by them, and here I am! I’m no writer, but I knew that one day I would be spending my days sitting amongst books, like a group of old friends. Occasionally, someone comes into the shop and buys something, but usually I’m alone, as I dreamt I would be when I was growing up. Alone, with all my books.
It’s not the most interesting job, I suppose you might say, but if you like the quiet and the way everyone respects that — and nobody makes any noise because they know everyone else is reading or concentrating — well, I like the feeling in the library when it’s like that, which is most of the time, of course. In the evening when the reading lamps come on, it’s very peaceful, and the air of study and learning, well, what a pleasant environment to work in.
As a teacher, 1 know that reading is one of the most important skills a child can learn, and it gives me great pleasure to see a child gradually discover the world of words. It’s like a new door opens on the world, and how lucky I am to be able to give them the key. I love reading myself, of course, but introducing a child to books is my greatest pleasure.
I’m a proofreader, which means I have to read what someone else has written — a book, a contract, anything — and check it for mistakes. Sounds boring, right? Well, maybe I’m strange, but I like the challenge, the detail. You See, when you proofread something, you’re not reading the words, you’re looking, well, at the letters, sort Of. What I like is knowing that when I’ve finished, a text is as good as it can be — no mistakes, just right.
My job Here at the company is Press Officer, and part Of my Job is to check what people are saying about the Company In the news. You see, its very important that Nobody Says or writes anything bad or false about the Company. If A bad story gets into the newspaper, for Example, it Could cost millions. If some journalist makes A false Accusation against us, it’s my job to kill the story And get an apology.
Q 23 Audioscript A1-A6
Hi, Fred — how are you?
Hi, Melissa. I’m fine.
Are you ready for the school camping trip next week?
Next week? I thought it was next month!
Didn’t you see the letter? All the details are in there.
What letter? I didn’t get a letter.
The school sent a letter to your parents, telling them when to pay and what you have to take and everything. And, you know, when we’re leaving.
When are we leaving? I have to get ready!
In the letter it says we’re leaving on Thursday afternoon. That’s only six days away.
Oh no! I don’t believe this — I missed the trip last year, too, when I was ill. It’s happening again!
So why didn’t your parents get the let… — oh, wait a minute! Didn’t you move into a new house a couple of months ago?
Yes, that’s right. I bet my mum didn’t tell the school. The school probably sent the letter to my old address.
So they did send the letter…
… but not to our new address! What am 1 going to do?
It’s not too late — you can get ready in time. You have all the things you need from last year, don’t you?
Yes, that’s true, I do. I need a bag, though. I lost my old one. Can I borrow one from you?
Yes, sure. I think I have an extra bag — a small rucksack, anyway. That’ll be all right. What else do you need?
Erm… I don’t think there’s anything. My boots need to be cleaned, but they’re fine otherwise — just what I’ll need.
Well, you should start packing. You’ve only got a few days.
Yes, I will. Where exactly are we going on th is trip, anyway? ,
Yom don’t know? We’re going all the way to Scotland! Well be camping by a beautiful lake and walking in the mountains.
I’ve never been to Scotland before. I wonder what it’s like.
It’ll be my first time, too. It’s supposed to be really beautiful in the summer, but I don’t know if the weather will be very good when were there.
Well, I’m taking some warm clothes and an umbrella, just in case it rains. And a lot of books to read when were stuck inside.
What? You can’t take an umbrella up a mountain!
Why not? I have to keep dry, don’t I?
This is going to be a strange trip!

Thanks for your letter. It was wonderful to hear all your news.
You asked me about your friend’s birthday. I can see your problem. It’s difficult to know what to buy, isn’t it? I’ve bought lots of presents for friends. The secret is to think of something unusual, because everyone will get them CDs and things like that. Maybe try to find something funny, or give them something that is very personal, like a photo in a frame. If you choose something like that, they’ll definitely love it!
Good luck. I’m sure you’ll choose something great. Let me know what you decide to give him!
Bye for now!

I like a lot of sports and games. I play football and tennis. I like football because it’s fun to play with your friends.
I play tennis at a tennis club and that’s a bit more serious. Sometimes we play in competitions. I like watching sport on TV, too — especially football, like the World Cup! It’s so exciting to see the best players. Sometimes I go to see my local football team play, and that’s great, too.

Task 1 sample answer:
I think computers are very useful for students, because you can use them for lots of different things. You can write documents on them, so if you are doing an essay, it’s easier and quicker to type, especially if you make a mistake or want to change something. You can also put pictures in, if it is a report or^something like that.
I use a computer for homework, but I also play games on it. Igo online and connect to this game which millions of people all round the world play together. You can meet people and have fun, and it’s a great way to relax, too.
I also watch movies and TV shows on the computer, and of course I use social networking sites like Facebook to keep in touch with my friends.
I think you have to be careful with computers, because they can take up so much of your time. I mean, some people spend hours and hours playing games and they don’t do their homework, or they stay up too late at night, or they lose touch with their friends. And
Computers are not the same as people — you need to leave the house and see people face to face. It’s not healthy to stay on the computer all the time.
How has the world changed because of computers?
The world has changed a lot because of computers, not just with games or social networking, but in other important ways, too. Banks and governments use computers, and hospitals and the police all use computers in their work.
What would your life be like without a computer?
Life would be very different for me — and for everyone — without computers. Sometimes you don’t realise how important they are.

You Play the part of a student at an international School. Your name is Alan/Alana. A classmate approaches you between classes to ask your opinion About Which restaurant to take his/her parents to.
(No Problem. What would you like to know?)
(S = Student; I = Interlocutor)
Hello, Alan/Alana. How are you?
Hi! I’m fine, thanks.
Do you mind if I ask your opinion about something?
No problem. What would you like to know?
Well, you’ve been to that new restaurant near the station — what did you think of it?
Yes, I went last night. I didn’t like it, to be honest. The food wasn’t very good and it was very expensive. Why do you ask?
My parents are visiting me next week, and I’d like to take them somewhere nice for a meal.
I see. Well, don’t go there! Why don’t you take them to the Italian restaurant near the school?
Actually, I went there a couple of weeks ago and it wasn’t very nice.
Oh dear. What was wrong?
The food wasn’t very tasty at all, and it was really noisy.
Oh. Well, if you like Chinese food, there’s a good Chinese restaurant nearby.
I love Chinese food. Thanks — that’s a great idea!
I like Chinese food too! Why don’t we go for a Chinese meal at the weekend?
I’m afraid I can’t this weekend, because I have to study. Would you like to join my parents and me next week instead?
Oh, thanks. I’d love to.
OK, then. I’ll see you next — week.
