Hello, Sam/Samantha.

Hi!

I’m glad I ran into you. I was wondering if you’d like to join me to see a concert this weekend.

Oh, yes, I would. When is it?

It’s this Saturday. It’s a free concert, so we don’t have to pay anything to get in.

That sounds good. Where is it going to be?

It’s in the city park.

OK, that sounds fun! Do you know who’s playing and what kind of music it’ll be?

It’s going to be local bands, and I think it’ll be mainly rock music and some jazz.

Great. When does the concert start?

It starts at 2 pm and goes on all afternoon. We can get there when it starts, or a little later if you like.

OK. Why don’t we meet at two o’clock, then?

Sure, I’d like that.

By the way. I’m going to study English with a friend this evening. Would you like to join us?

That sounds great, Sam/Samantha.

OK. We’re meeting at my house at 6 o’clock. You can come over whenever you like.

Would you like me to bring a film to watch later?

Good idea! Bring it along and we can watch it after studying.

OK. See you later, then.

Bye!

Speaker A

There are many other things I’d rather do than go to the doctor, like hang out with friends, watch TV — even do homework! It’s really not a fun experience. You usually have to wait half an hour, even if you’re on time for your appointment. At least there are magazines to read! But I go once a year, every year, just to make sure everything’s OK. It’s important to do this to catch any problems before they become serious.

Speaker В

Everyone in my family goes to the doctor regularly to make sure everything’s OK. Everyone except my granddad, that is. He’s in good health generally, but he hardly ever sees a doctor. We tell him all the time — make an appointment, go and get it over with, it’ll only take an hour or so. He just refuses to go, so I’m quite concerned about his health. I told him this and he promised he’d go. We’ll see!

Speaker С

When I was а little kid, I went to see my grandma after she had an operation. I was really excited about going to see her, because I loved spending time with her. When we arrived at the hospital, I saw some things that I wasn’t ready for — lots of sick people. I felt a sudden sense of fear that I might get sick too. It’s difficult for me to go anywhere near a hospital now. Of course it’s just in my mind.

SpeakerD

A lot of people are afraid of hospitals. They don’t like going to the doctor, and they’re afraid of blood. I wouldn’t say I like those things, but they don’t bother me. I think that because both of my parents work in medicine, I’m used to it. In fact, I’m really inspired by what my mum and dad do. I hope that one day I can be like them and help people with health problems. It’s my goal in life.

SpeakerE

I’m Generally a healthy person. I go to the doctor once a Year. I eat well. I stay in shape, and I hardly ever get sick. But Just last week, I was rushed to hospital with some Terrible Stomach pains. I felt awful and I thought I was Going To die! I’m being dramatic, but it was a really bad Experience. Turns out it was something I’d eaten that Made Me sick. I was fine after the doctors gave me some Medication.

Hi, John. Are you ready for next week’s maths exam?

No! I have loads of studying to do. I’ll barely have time for anything else this week. I have to go to football practice, of course, but I won’t be hanging out with my friends.

It’s just one week, then it’s over. We should study together, don’t you think?

That’s a great idea. What are you doing tomorrow evening?

Take a guess… I’m studying for maths! I’m probably going to get started right after school. Do you want to walk home with me?

Um, well. I’ve got football practice tomorrow, but afterwards I can come to your house.

OK. So let’s say around six, then.

Sounds good. I’ll bring all my notes from class. I’ve been really good at taking them, even if I don’t completely understand them!

Ha! Well, we may get a little help from my dad. He’s great at maths. He’ll be home later in the evening.

Fantastic. My parents are terrible with numbers. They’re more into books and literature. I never have problems with English or history!

OK. We’ll study at your house for those exams. I’m not very good at history, I must say. I think it’s interesting, but I can’t remember dates. I’m better at adding and subtracting numbers.

History is one of my favourite subjects, right after science. It’s interesting to find out what happened so long ago.

I agree. I like the stories, but sometimes

I get who did what mixed up, and when it happened, as I said before.

Well, you’re more than welcome to study with me for history. I’m sure I can help you.

I think the history exam’s in about three weeks, isn’t it?

It’s at the end of the month, and it’s the middle of the month now. It’s less than three weeks now. Right. Oh. So, I guess after our maths exam, we’ll be studying history!

No, eventually we have the summer to relax in… and of course we’ll forget everything we’ve learnt. You mean all our hard work will be for nothing? Don’t say that! It’s not funny!

I’m joking. You know how it is — when we start next year, it’ll all come back to us.

True. Well, I’d better get going. I’ll see you after football practice, OK?

Right. Looking forward to it. Have fun at practice, John!

Bye!

Hi Sue,

Thanks for writing. It’s always lovely to hear from you!

I’m sorry to hear that your МРЗ player broke. Here’s my advice about buying a new one. The most important thing to consider when buying an MP3 player is how many songs you want to put on it. You should get one that can hold them all. I wouldn’t get the most expensive one, but I would try to find the right one for the best price. To keep your MP3 player from breaking again, you should be careful not to drop it or put things on top of it.

Hope my advice helps, and good luck with your purchase!

Bye for now,

Dina

Relaxing attractions unhappy easily cloudy luckily I like going to the cinema because I enjoy watching films, especially action films with amazing scenery and good performances. I also like going with friends to watch a film as it’s a great way to hang out with them, and we can talk about the film later on.

Task 1 sample answer:

It’s important to take care of the environment, because if we don’t, our planet will suffer from problems. If lakes and rivers become dirty, we will have less water to drink, and animals will die as well. The air we breathe will become dirty also, and this will cause health problems. We can do things to protect the environment, such as using rubbish bins to throw away our rubbish. We can also recycle, so our resources will last longer. We can use public transport like buses instead of cars in order to reduce air pollution.

As far as paper or plastic bags are concerned, I think it’s better to use plastic. Paper ones are made from trees, which means we have to cut trees down to make them.

Should governments make laws to help protect the environment?

Yes, I think so. They should make laws that punish people for doing certain things, such as throwing rubbish onto the streets.

How does wind and solar power help the environment?

I think wind and solar power help the environment because they produce clean energy, which means the air will be less polluted.

Yes, I looked through my desk and through my bags. Sometimes I put them in the drawers, but I didn’t see it there. It’s very strange.

Have you asked other people in your family if they’ve seen it?

Yes, I asked my mum, because she sometimes goes into my room. I asked my brother as well, but he hasn’t seen it. I’m sure it’s somewhere. Maybe it fell behind my desk. I haven’t looked there yet.
