Quakers, also known as the Religious Society of Friends, are a Christian group that

Appeared in the mid-17*’’ century in England. A 17’*’-century judge said they quaked before the power of the Lord, so this was how Quakers got their name. At that time George Fox, the founder of the Friends, began to organize people, preaching his idea of “God in every man”. He and his followers believed people should sense God inside of themselves, without church buildings or priests.

Quakers suffered from much official persecution, including imprisonment and execution, for their belief thal worship of God should be very personal. Quaker missionaries arrived in the USA in 1656. The Quaker population in American colonies existed mainly in the northeast and was very active socially and fought for the abolition of slavery.

Quakers think there is a divine spark in everybody and that each human being is of unique worth. This is why Quakers value all people equally, and oppose anything potentially harmful or threatening towards people.
