Sample conversation

(S = Student; I = Interlocutor)

Hello, George/Georgia. Nice to see you.

Hi. Nice to see you too.

I was looking for you earlier, because I was wondering if you still had that DVD on water pollution. If you do, could I borrow it for a couple of days?

Yes, of course you can borrow it. Do you need it for anything in particular?

Yes, I’m doing a project in my Geography class on environmental problems. I think it might help give me some ideas about what to write.

Well, it’s a very good documentary, so it should be useful. Is the project just on water pollution?

It’s on all problems to do with water and the environment. I want to do one part on water pollution, as well as other topics.

Oh, I see. What other topics are you covering as well?

I’m writing about water shortages around the world and the problems associated with rising sea levels, such as how some islands might soon disappear.

That sounds really interesting.

Yes. It’s a fascinating subject and I’ve really been enjoying doing the research.

Good. Can I get you a coffee while you’re here?

No, I’m fine, thanks. I’ll just havg some water. Are you free tomorrow evening?

Yes, I am. Why?

Would you like to come to the theatre with me? There’s a new play on. It’s had excellent reviews.

I’d love to. Thanks for asking me.

Thanks for lending me the DVD. I’ll see you tomorrow outside the theatre at 8 pm. Bye.

See you there. Bye.

Speaker A

There are many days when you can turn on the radio or TV or surf the internet and find some dramatic story happening. It starts off as ‘breaking news’, such as afire in a building. They say it was an accident, then they say someone set it on purpose. Then they announce it was a group protesting about something. The police can’t find them, but then suddenly, they’ve arrested them. All of this can happen in just hours!

Speaker В

The news is rarely pleasant to hear. Sometimes local stories are OK, but when it comes to world news, don’t count on being happy to hear it. There are lots of terrible things going on all over the planet, and it’s true that we get used to it, but Tm sure it makes plenty of people sad. I myself don’t like to read the news because it’s depressing. I stick to the positive side of things.

SpeakerC

A lot of people get their news from TV. It’s fine if you want to learn about a lot of things that you don’t necessarily care about. For example, I don’t like hearing about sport at all. It’s boring! What I like to do is read the news on the internet. It’s the best way to get exactly the kind of news you’re looking for. Then when you’re done, you can go and do something else, like check Facebook or email.

SpeakerD

I find that the news is quite enjoyable these days. If you watch any news programme or click on any news website, you’ll see that there are a lot of different categories of news, such as health, entertainment, sports, local news, world news, and the list goes on. I really like How We can get all sorts of news from so many places. There’s no end, really, to how many different types of news are available.

SpeakerE

I think Most people like to get their news from websites Or TV, And those are great places to get it, of course.

I myself watch news programmes on TV all the time. But What I’ve noticed is that nowadays you can actually get quite a lot of news from Facebook, believe it or not. If you like an organisation or club’s page, you get updates whenever they have a news story. I rather like that!

Tom:

Hey, Gillian, what’s the matter? You seem upset.

Gillian: Hi, Tom. You’re right. I’m not having such a great day. You know my friend Sheila? Well, we had an argument last night.

Oh no! What happened?

Tom:

Gillian: We were studying for our history exam, and

I was annoyed because Sheila obviously hadn’t studied for a while. She didn’t know anything! How did you manage to study together, then?

Tom:

Gillian: It wasn’t easy. She kept asking me a lot of questions about really basic stuff.

That is annoying. What did you do?

Tom:

Gillian: After about thirty minutes I told her she was going to fail if she knew so little.

No way! What did she do?

Tom:

Gillian: She got angry and left. I felt really bad after that.

Tom:

Did you have any idea she would be such a bad study partner?

Gillian: I Knew she’d been going out a lot, and she used to complain about how her mum was always telling her to study more.

When is your history exam exactly?

Tom:

Tom:

Gillian: It was this morning! So, as well as having a fight, I’ve also just had an exam. I’m sure I did OK, but I’m worried about Sheila failing, especially after what I said. Maybe she’ll blame me. I really hope she’s done OK — but I don’t think she has. Don’t worry. If Sheila doesn’t pass, maybe she’ll take her studies more seriously. And who knows — maybe her mark for coursework will make up for a bad exam mark.

Gillian: What do you think I should do?

Tom:

I’m not sure I would do anything. You could apologise to her, but if she’s still upset, maybe she needs some time to get over it.

Gillian: Oh, I don’t know what’ll happen if she doesn’t do well in that exam. She’ll hate me for the rest of my life!

Gillian;

Oh, come on! You’re being far too dramatic, Gillian! Maybe she’ll realise that she was wrong to get angry.

We’ll see. For now, I think I’ll take your advice and just wait.

When do you find out how you did in the exam?

Maybe tomorrow — by the end of the week at the latest. So if Sheila didn’t do well. I’ll see it in her face.

Yeah, and if she seems happy, then you could apologise, knowing she didn’t fail.

Sounds like a good idea. Thanks for your help, Tom.

Hi Bobby,

Thanks for your last letter. It sounds like you’ve got c nice spring project ahead of you. Here’s what I woulc, do if I were doing the same project.

The first thing to do is find the best area for your garde I would pick an area that gets lots of sun, so that your plants will grow. As for planting flowers or vegetables, I think both are great ideas, but I would choose vegetables, because when they’re ready you can eat them. You should probably check on your garden three times a week, to make sure it has enough water.

Have fun setting up your garden!

Bye for now,

Anastasia

I believe it is very important to eat well, because you may have health problems if you don’t. Healthy foods such as fruit and vegetables have vitamins that we need, and food also gives us energy to do the things we need to do during the day.

Task 1 sample answer:

I think we need friends because we need other people in our lives to share experiences with. Friends can also help us with our problems, and they can be great to hang out with. I think it’s important to have a best friend because this is the one friend you know you can trust. I think having lots of friends has benefits, but I prefer to have just a few good friends. Friendships can be a lot of work and it’s dijficult to do this with many people.

Can your family members be your friends?

I believe your family members’can be your friends. This is true with your brothers and sisters, because you are close in age and you experience a lot of the same things together.

Should friends agree on a lot of things?

I think friends should agree on a lot of things, but they don’t have to agree on everything. People have different opinions — even your best friend.
