Hello, Marcus/Marcia. How are you?

Hi! I’m fine, thanks.

I wanted to ask you something. You’re in the school football team, aren’t you?

Yes, 1 am. Why?

Well, I really want to join the team but I don’t know how to.

Come to a practice and meet the team. Then, if you’re any good, you can play.

When is the next one?

Next practice is today, after school. Do you want to come?

I’d love to! But wait a minute -1 don’t have a shirt.

Can I borrow one?

Sure, we have extra shirts. Have you got any boots?

No, I don’t. They’re at home. It’s a bit of a problem, because I’ve got big feet. What shall I do?

It doesn’t matter this time — just wear your trainers.

OK, great.

What position do you play?

Oh, I play in attack usually. Tm pretty fast, you know. What about you?

Tm a defender. So we’ll see what happens at practice. Do you want to go to a cafe afterwards?

Oh, I can’t after practice today, because I have so much homework to do. Why don’t we go for something to eat tomorrow instead?

OK, that’s a good idea.

Great. I’ll see you at practice.

Bye!

Dialogue A

A: What can I do for you today?

B: I just want to have it washed and blow-dried, please.

A: The ends look very dry. I think we should give them a trim. I’ll just cut a little off.

B: Will it take long? I have to be back at work in an hour.

A: Don’t worry. I’ll have you looking great in no time.

Dialogue В

A: Could you bring me a pillow and a blanket, please?

B; Yes, of course. Do you need anything else?

A: No, thanks. But can you tell me how long it is until we land?

B: We should be landing in about five hours.

A: Good — I can sleep for a bit and then do some work.

Dialogue C

A: Hello. I ordered a copy of the latest novel by Hilary Mantel last week. Has it arrived?

B: Let me check. What name is the order under?

A: Alexander Inman.

B: It hasn’t arrived yet. Could you call in again tomorrow?

A: Yes, that’s fine. I hope it’s come, though. I can’t wait to read it!

Dialogue D

A: What’s this one supposed to be? It’s just strips of different coloured paint.

B: It’s not supposed to ‘be’ anything. The colours in the picture are meant to affect you emotionally.

A: I don’t understand. How are they supposed to make me feel?

B: Well, does this work make you sad, or angry, for example?

A: I just find it annoying! I’ll never be able to relate to modern paintings.

Literature, or history, also requires good thinking skills and logic. It’s a bit of a myth that the science students are the cleverest. Everyone has talents in different areas and many of the students who are good at arts subjects are simply brilliant. It’s also true that some of the students who do well in science are quite slow in other subjects.

SpeakerE

Even teachers who are very knowledgeable about their subject need to understand that this is not enough to make them a good teacher. A good teacher must be able to get knowledge across to students. They really need to make the subject lively and interesting to inspire students. Too many teachers don’t spend enough time on lesson preparation and the result is often a dry, dull lesson and bored, unhappy students.

I’m not really sure what I want to study after school. I’m good at both science and arts subjects and get top marks in nearly all my exams. I’d quite like to go on to study something to do with law or politics at college, but my parents seem to think that sticking to the sciences would give me better job opportunities. I’m not going to make a decision until I really have to, though.

This year my school decided to stop offering music lessons. Now anyone who wants to learn a musical instrument will have to take private lessons. It’s not so bad for me — I can afford to pay for lessons. But there Are Many students who can’t afford them. I don’t think school should just be about learning academic subjects. It Should help you to develop as a person too. What better way to do that is there than through music?

Hi, Ben! I’m glad I caught you. I wanted to ask you something. What are you wearing to the fancy dress party tonight?

I’m not really sure yet, Cara.

Oh! Aren’t you going to go as a pirate?

No, I didn’t like that idea at all. I think I’d rather go as a circus clown. How about you? I’ve got a fantastic cat costume I’m going to wear. How are you going to get to the party?

I don’t know. I asked my dad but he has to take Mum shopping after work.

Well, if you don’t want to get the bus, you could come in our car. My mum won’t mind picking you up.

Brilliant. Thanks a lot. What time should I expect you at my house then?

Well, the invitation says to arrive at seven o’clock. But I don’t want to be the first to arrive. Yeah, I agree. I hate sitting around in an empty room waiting for everyone to turn up. I’d rather be a bit late than too early.

Exactly! So what time then?

Well, I won’t be ready to leave the house until six thirty, so I’ll be able to pick you up at a quarter to seven. We’ll get there by seven fifteen. Great. Six forty five is fine for me. Are you taking anything to the party?

If you cant make something then you’ll have to buy some soft drinks. It would be rude to turn up empty-handed.

I know. I can always go and buy some crisps and sweets, as well as soft drinks, I suppose. Are you making something?

My mum has made a chocolate cake and when I get home after school. I’m going to make a big pile of cheese and ham sandwiches.

I’ve just remembered! My mum has a pack of frozen sausage rolls in the freezer.

They’re really easy to put in the oven and bake.

Yes, even I can manage that.

Great! They’re always popular at parties, too. OK, Ben. I’ll see you this evening. Bye for now.

OK. Catch you later.

Hi Lucy,

Thanks so much for your letter. I was great to hear from you!

Your trip to Paris sounds fantastic. I’m really jealous! I don’t know much about the city at all. Like you, I know the Eiffel Tower. And I think there’s a museum called The Louvre, isn’t there? I’m glad you can speak French because I can’t! We don’t learn French at school.

Thank you for offering to get me a present. I’d love a t-shirt if you can find a nice one.

I hope you have a really great time! I’m sure you will. You can tell me about it in your next letter.

Bye for now!

Sergei

Task 1 sample answer:

I think newspapers and magazines are very important because they give information and they are entertaining too. We need them to find out what is going on in the rest of the world. It’s very important to be well-informed about the world.

I’m afraid to say, I don’t read newspapers very often because they don’t often contain information that interests me. But I do read magazines sometimes. Magazines are usually much more entertaining than newspapers. Also, you can read a magazine oh the subjects that interest you, such as fashion, music or cinema.

I think it’s more convenient to read a newspaper because you can take it with you wherever you go. But I think that you can find the latest news much faster if you read it online.

What kind of newspapers or magazines do you prefer to read?

As I said, I don’t really read newspapers. But I do like magazines. I buy music magazines to find out about my favourite bands.

Do newspapers and magazines have a future in the modem world?

I think people are going to read about their favourite topics and the news more and more on the internet. So I don’t believe there is much of a future for newspapers And Magazines.

• Offer your fellow student some coffee. (Can 1 get you a coffee while you’re here?)

• Accept your classmate’s invitation. (I’d love to. Thanks for asking me.)
