Hello, Freddie/Freda!

Hello!

I’m glad I ran into you. I was wondering if I could borrow your earphones for tonight. Do you mind?

No problem. Here they are.

Thanks.

I Thought you had earphones of your own. Did something happen?

There’s a problem with the cable and they aren’t working any more.

Oh, I see. What do you need them for, by the way?

I want to listen to some French lessons tonight. I’ve got an exam in my French class soon, so I want to practice for the listening.

I See. I use mine for Spanish. When is your French exam?

It’s in two weeks. I have a lot of studying to do.

What do you find most difficult about French?

I think speaking is really hard. I’m not used to speaking French yet, because it’s a beginner’s class.

I have a partner in class and we meet sometimes, but I still need more practice!

I’ve never studied French, but it sounds exciting. Is it similar to English at all?

There are some words that are close to English, but you have to learn a lot of new ones.

I Was just on my way to meet a friend. Would you like to join us?

Thanks, but I’m on my way home and I need to study. Would you like to meet for coffee some time tomorrow?

That would be great.

OK, let’s talk after school then. Thanks again for the earphones.

You’re welcome! See you later.

Oh, here comes the waiter.

Speaker А

Well, I love playing football. I’m not very good, and we get beaten nearly every week by the other teams in the league, but it’s taking part that counts for me. I don’t care so much about the result as the game itself. 1 love running around, I love the exercise, and playing my best, even if my best is no good! Just participating is enough — we don’t have to win all the time to have fun.

Speaker В

I play ice hockey, which is a tough sport, and you need your team-mates to help you all the time. Nobody can win a game on their own, even if they’re a great player with all the skill in the world. You won’t get anywhere without the team. Everyone must work together for the common good. And when there’s a fight, well, that’s when you want your team-mates behind you most!

SpeakerC

You can’t expect to be any good straight away, of course. I started playing tennis when I was very young, only six or seven, and at first my coach — my coach was very strict, by the way — well, he wouldn’t let me play a competitive match. He said I had to learn first. Winning was for later, mastering the technique came first. So I had to train and train and train before I could really begin to play.

SpeakerD

Boxing is a very demanding sport and you have to be very well prepared, or you could get into serious trouble in a fight. So I do a lot of weight-training and I work out every day in order to keep myself in shape, in good enough condition to challenge my opponent. I’m in the gym or running on the road all the time, it seems, but without this preparation, well. I’d lose for sure.

SpeakerE

Golf isn’t a game which demands great fitness.

You need to practise, but the pressure of a real game isn’t something you can prepare for. So what makes a great golfer? In a word, ability. Natural ability. When you see a great golfer play, you know you’ll never reach their level, because somehow they do stuff other people can’t do and can’t learn. They’re born, not made; they already know, they weren’t taught. Shame, but you can’t win them all!

Hi, Bobby. What’s that you’ve got?

It’s my new mobile, Helen. My dad just bought it for me.

I thought you got a new phone for your birthday a few months ago. Did you lose it? I’m always losing mine and my mum said she wont buy me another one next time it happens.

The one I got for Christmas broke when

I dropped it. I was running for the bus and it fell out of my pocket. My dad was pretty good about it, really — didn’t blame me.

Yes, but you’d better not do the same thing with this one!

It’s got a special case to protect it, so if I drop it, hopefully it won’t break. I’m going to be really careful, anyway! It’s much better than my last one.

Has it got loads of games on? I like ‘Angry Birds’!

Yes, it’s got hundreds. But I don’t play them much. I usually just listen to music most oj’ the time. It’s got a great camera too. It takes fantastic pictures.

Yes, I love using the camera on mine. Mine plays videos, too, so on the bus to school, I can just put my headphones in and watch a show or something.

Can you connect to the internet on yours?

I’d rather check my email than watch some TV programme on the bus.

I don’t use email much anymore. Most people these days just text each other. It’s quicker, isn’t it?

Yes… I send a lot of text messages, but I use email if I want to send a long message.

Oh, I can’t be bothered to write so much — just a quick text — or I call if I want to chat or something. I don’t want to press all those buttons. It gets really confusing.

That’s why I don’t play the games!

Oh, yes! It uses the battery up really quickly, too, just like watching movies, so sometimes when I get a call it just turns itself off in the middle of the conversation.

Oh, isn’t it horrible when you get cut off like that? Hey, let me have your number so I can put it in my phone.

Sure… Oh, what is it? I cap never remember it. Have you got a pen? I’ll write it down for you.

No, I haven’t. But why don’t you just call me on your phone? Then I can save your number on mine.

Good idea! Now — wait a minute, where’s my phone? Oh…

Don’t tell me you’ve lost it!

I think reading books is a good idea because you can learn lots of interesting things. You can read stories or you can read books about true things, like history or science. My favourite book is about a sailor called Joshua who went round the world and had lots of adventures.

I learnt all about the sea and even some facts about places I’d never heard of in this book.

Sample answer:

Perm Russia 2"‘‘ November 2013

Hi Nick,

Thanks for your letter. It was great to hear from you!

Yes, I moved school last year and so I can give you some advice. Firstly, you should try to make friends with people in your class. It’s easy to talk to people if you sit next to them, for example. My new best friend is the boy I sit next to during our English lessons. It wasn’t so easy to make friends with children from other classes, though, so I joined the football team and I met some people that way. You should do that, too, and soon you’ll have a pretty busy social life!

Good luck in your new school. I’m sure you’re going to be very popular!

Bye!

Vladimir

Task 1 sample answer:

I think travelling to different places is a good idea because you can learn lots of interesting things and meet some interesting people. I like doing new things, so travelling to a new place sounds really great. You can’t stay in the same place all the time, and it’s good to do something different sometimes. If you work or go to school all year, when the summer comes it’s a good idea to change your routine, have a new experience and refresh yourself.

I haven’t travelled to very many places outside my own country, but last year I went to London with my family for a holiday. It was amazing! I saw all the things I’ve read about and places I’ve seen in films. In fact, it was like a film!

If I could go anywhere I wanted. I’d prefer to go somewhere far away, like Africa, because I’m sure it’s very different from my country! I’d like to meet the people and see how they live, and maybe I would try some of their food and learn some of their language.

Has anyone you know travelled to a strange or interesting place?

My uncle has been to Egypt, and he says it’s a really interesting place. The Pyramids are there, and it’s really hot in the desert.

Why is travel easier today than it used to be?

I think it’s easier to travel nowadays than it was before, because it’s cheaper. You can get a cheap plane ticket and fly anywhere you like. Of course, it’s also quicker than it used to be, because the planes and trains are better, and there are more roads now.
