We were on holiday in Hungary in a town near the River Danube. It started raining one night and it didn’t stop for three days. The river began to overflow and water was running through the streets. We decided to leave, but it was too late to leave on foot. We waited and someone came with a boat. They took us to the edge of town, then we walked to the airport. It wasn’t one of my best holidays, but it was quite excitingl

Speaker В

Most people enjoy sunny weather and hate the rain, but I feel just the opposite. Rainy weather gives me an excuse to hang out in my room and mess around. I also like the smell of wet grass and trees, and it makes everything grow. Sunny weather is fine for some days, but I’m not a fan of the heat. It often makes me tired and I just want to take a shower. That’s no way to spend the day.

SpeakerC

I was really excited to go on holiday to Spain with my family. I woke up that morning and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. I got all my stuff ready and we drove to the airport. When we got there, we learned the bad news — the plane that was supposed to take us to Barcelona was delayed. It was coming from Germany, and they were having terrible thunderstorms there, and the plane couldn’t take off.

SpeakerD

My family and I were on holiday in Greece one summer. We were staying on an island, which were beautiful but sometimes really hot. During the day we could swim, but at night, it didn’t cool off much. A storm came in one evening near the end of our trip and it started pouring down. Everyone was running to their rooms to escape, but my sister and I were so happy to see it, we stayed outside and danced around in it for ages! We had a fantastic timel

SpeakerE

As a child I remember visiting my aunt and uncle in the US. The area where they live suffers from tornadoes in the spring, which is when we were there. We didn’t see any during our stay, thank goodness, but about 100 kilometres away, two tornadoes destroyed some homes and people were hurt. I was quite scared when I heard the news, but luckily my aunt and uncle have an underground space we could hide in if necessary.

Stuart: Hey Danielle, how was your trip to Thailand?

Danielle: It was great, Stuartl We just got back two days ago actually. I was glad to come back because I was beginning to miss home.

I know what you mean. My family and

I went to the Czech Republic for a few days. After a while I was beginning to miss hearing English. Did you enjoy yourself on your trip?

Danielle: For the most part, yes. The beach was fantastic and we took a boat trip to a small island.

That sounds nice. What did you enjoy the most?

Stuart:

Stuart:

Danielle: My dad and I went snorkelling one day and we saw a lot of colourful fish. That was the best. Was there anything you didn’t like?

Stuart:

Danielle: The place was a bit crowded at times. It was a nice resort and the staff were helpful, but the pool was busy and it was impossible to find somewhere to sit.

Well, you should get away from the resort while you’re on holiday.

Danielle: We did. Actually, the fact that the resort was full wasn’t the worst. My dad got stung by a jellyfish. Oh not What happened?

Stuart:

Stuart:

Danielle: It was swimming near his leg and he just didn’t see it. Luckily, there was a first-aid kit at the resort. He applied lotion to stop the burning. Did it work?

Stuart:

Danielle: After an hour, the pain had mostly stopped. He took some aspirin also. He was back to normal later that evening, but he didn’t swim again.

Stuart: I wouldn’t eitherl

Danielle: I swam some more, but I stayed close to the shorel

Stuart: Did you visit any cities, like Bangkok?

Danielle: We didn’t visit the capital. Our plane had stopped there on the way to our destination, but we didn’t have time to explore.

What about near where you were staying?

Stuart:

Danielle: We went to a village nearby. That was a lot of fun. We went to a fruit and vegetable market which had all these exotic fruits.

Stuart: Did you try any?

Danielle: Yes, lots of them. Some of them were quite nice, but others were either too sweet or a bit tasteless.

Well, if you have any photos, I’d love to see them.

Danielle: Of course. I’ll bring them tomorrow.

Hi Josh,

I was glad to get your letter. It sounds like your friend George has a problem with eating well. Here’s some advice that may help you.

First, I think you should tell him to try to eat less red meat and less fatty food, like pizzas, chips and hamburgers. Because they have lots of calories, if you eat them you put on lots of weight. He should try to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables. If he likes salads, I would suggest those too. I think he should completely avoid fizzy drinks with lots of sugar, and sweets, chocolate and ice cream.

I hope my advice helps you. Let me know how things go.

Bye for now, Dmitri

С2 Warm-up sample answer:

I think mobile phones are very useful because they help you keep in touch with people easier. In some cases, they are very important if you have an emergency and you need to call someone to help you. I think we should use them carefully, though. It’s not a good idea to talk on them all the time.

Task 1 sample answer:

I think exams are important because they’re a way of showing what you’ve learnt throughout the year. They make you study and learn things that you might never learn without an exam.

Lots of people hate exams and find them stressful, but

I don’t mind them. In fact, I enjoy them! I make sure I’ve studied enough so I can answer the questions and show what I’ve learnt.

I’d prefer to have lots of short exams often because you don’t have to study as much at one time. Also, if you do badly in one, it isn’t a serious problem because you can get marks in lots of other exams too.

How do you usually study for exams?

I usually write everything down, and then test myself.

I ask myself questions and then check I’ve got the answer right. If I got it wrong, I write it down again and again until I get it right.

Is it better to study on your own or with other people?

I usually prefer to study on my own, but sometimes it’s better to study with other people. If you’re studying for a history exam, for example, you can ask each other questions about all the fact you have to learn.

Hi, Carl/Carla!

Of course. I’ll bring it to school tomorrow.

Thanks a lot.
