A3 В 2 Cl D4
A: Hi there. I’m returning four films and a game and I’d like to take these three new ones.
B: The game’s actually three days late, so there’ll be an extra charge of three pounds. I’m afraid.
A: So how much do I owe all together?
B: That’ll be eight pounds, please. And bring the new films back by Friday to avoid paying extra again.
A: Will do.
A: I don’t think I like this band. They’re too loud for mel
B: Let’s go over to the second stage then and see who’s playing there.
A: Can we stop by one of the food stalls first and get a bite to eat?
B: Good idea. We can check out who else is on this evening while we’re there.

A: Excuse me. Can I ask you a few questions about this laptop?
B: Certainly. What would you like to know? It’s a great model. Very light, and lots of memory.
A: Yes, I can see that. But it doesn’t seem to have a DVD player — is that right?
B: That’s right, it doesn’t. These more modern small laptops — or netbooks as we call them — don’t come with CD-ROM or DVD players. That’s why they’re so small and light.
A: Oh, I see.
A: Hello. What can I get for you?
B: Could I have a cheeseburger and fries, please?
A: Regular fries or large?
B: Err… regular please.
A; And what would you like to drink with that?
But I don’t think that’s fair. For one thing, I do just as many jobs around the house as she does. And, stuff isn’t any cheaper to buy just because I’m younger. I think we should get the same, but my parents just won’t listen.
For many kids, pocket money is when your mum and dad give you a certain amount of money each week. We don’t really have that in my family, because my parents think it’s better if I work for my money. So that’s what I have to do. I have to earn it! They give me different amounts for different jobs around the house depending on how hard they are. And the more I do, the more I earn. They tell me this is a life lesson.
I get five pounds a week pocket money. I can use it for whatever I want or put it in my bank account if I want to save. It’s rare that I manage to save anything. I use the money to do things like downloading new songs onto my phone or going out. But I’m only supposed to get the money if I’ve been well-behaved. They’ve stopped my money a couple of times. It was awful!
I don’t get a fixed amount of pocket money every week. Instead, I’ve got a bank account. My parents and relatives put money in for birthdays, Christmas or if I’ve done well in my exams, things like that. I have to budget the money myself. If I run out of money, I can ask my parents for more, but I have to tell them why I’ve run out and why I deserve extra. They’re very strict about it.
My husband isn’t in favour of giving the kids any pocket money at all. He thinks they should always ask when they want money, as that’s how it was when he was young. I don’t agree. I think they should have an allowance and not beg for money. It’s better for me because they know with an allowance that that is all they’ll get, whereas if they have to ask for money they’ll be whining for it all the time!
I’m fed up of the fact that my older sister gets a much bigger weekly allowance than me. My parents argue that she should have more mon^y because she’s older.
Dad, could I have a word, please?
I’m a bit busy now, Kim. Can’t it wait until tomorrow? I need to finish off this report and send it to the office this evening.
I’m sorry, but it’s important and it won’t take long I promise.
All right. What is it?
Well. I was hoping we could come to an arrangement about the weekend. Can I put off my Saturday chores to go on a day trip with the Fishers, please?
Kim, we’ve been through this before. No.
Those chores have to be done every Saturday and they come before everything else.
That’s our agreement.
Tes, I know it’s our agreement. I’m not asking for any change in the agreement. Just a one-off exception.
I don’t see why you can’t get up early and finish them before you set off. The answer is still no.
The Fishers are leaving at 7.30 am. I’d have to get up at Sam to do the chores first. It’s bad enough that I’ll have to be out the door by 7 as it is!
Why on earth are they leaving so early in the morning? Where are you going?
A day trip to London. The plan is to see some sights, take in a museum or two and maybe go to the theatre as well.
That’s a lot of activities for one day. It sounds rather tiring.
It does a bit. But it’s a great opportunity for a really good trip and it’s educational and cultural too.
It also sounds like a great opportunity for me to pay a lot of money for it. How much is this going to cost?
It’s not going to cost you anything. Mum said that Gran would give me twenty pounds and I’ve still got some birthday money left.
I see. But those chores won’t do themselves.
I hope you’re not expecting me or your mother to do them if I agree to let you go.
No, of course not. I could do them on Sunday instead.
That doesn’t sound very realistic. You’ll be too tired after the trip.
Dad, if you let me have a bit of a lie-in in the morning. I’ll be fine. I’ll be able to get my chores done long before lunch at midday and then I’ll have all afternoon and evening to relax as well.
I’m still not sure it’s a good idea. What does your mum say?
Both Mum and Gran think it’s a great opportunity and that I shouldn’t let it slip me by. Please, Dad!
Oh, all right then. You’ve twisted my arm.
But just this once. We’ve got an agreement and you’ve got to stick to it.
Thanks, Dad. You’re the best!
Off you go now, before I change my mind. I’ve got work to do!

Thanks for your letter. It was lovely to hear from you!
I don’t think you’ll find working in a cafe a hard job. I’m sure you’ll pick it up quickly. You have to be friendly to customers and careful to bring them the right things. If you work more than about 40 hours each week, you’ll probably get very tired. Try not to work more than 8 hours each day. I think you’ll love the job. You’ll meet lots of interesting people. Some of them will leave big tips too!
Let me know how it goes!
All the best,

Task 1 sample answer:
1 like healthy food, like salads and fruit and vegetables.
I don’t really like meat, but I do eat chicken sometimes.
I know it’s not good for me, but I love chocolate.
I don’t really like cooking because for some dishes it takes such a long time. I’m not patient enough. And you often make lots of mess and it takes a long time to clear up afterwards. I prefer someone else like my mum or dad to do the cooking.
I love going out to eat with my family or friends on special occasions. It’s really nice to go for a pizza on someone’s birthday. But I wouldn’t want to eat out every day. most of the time, it’s nicer to eat at home.
What can people do to improve their eating habits?
Most people eat too much meat, and too many things with sugar in. They need to be more careful about what they buy and cook.
Peoples lives have changed and people have less time to cook good food, these days. Also, fast food is usually very cheap. I think it should be more expensive!
1) What’s your favourite month? Why do you like it?

Hi there. How are you today?
Very well, thanks. I’m glad I saw you as I wanted to ask you if I can borrow some gardening gloves. Jane told me you like gardening, so I thought you might have some.
Sure, no problem. When do you need them?
Have you decided to take up gardening?
Not exactly. There’s a cleaning and planting event happening in the park and I want to help out.
That sounds fun. What time does it start?
Well, we’re meeting at the entrance gates at 9 am.
What are you going to plant?
Some areas are going to get flowers and other areas some trees and shrubs. It’s going to look completely different at the end!
Well, it sounds great. Can you do it all in one day?
I think so. There’ll be a lot of people!
Well done! I’m just going to get an ice cream, actually. Would you like one?
No thanks. I’m fine. Look, would you like to come along on Saturday too? We could really do with some
Yes, I’d love to. Thanks. And luckily I’ve got two pairs of gardening gloves!
Brilliant! So, I’ll see you soon. Enjoy your ice cream!
I will! Bye!
