A; This one comes with a camera and has lots of memory for MP3s.

B: I don’t think I want to play music on it. How long does the battery last?

A: Quite a long time. It comes with a USB charger, of course. Your contract won’t change, but you get three extra hours talking time and free text messages for one month as a special offer.

A; Oh, I see. Well, come over here and have a look at these road bikes. They’re much lighter than mountain bikes.

B: I like this one! How many gears has it got?

Q 48 Audioscript B2

Speaker A

Yeah, I suppose I’d describe myself as popular — I’m always out with my friends doing something. I don’t really have one special friend, a best friend, because I don’t spend a lot of time with anyone in particular. I suppose I just like hanging out with a hunch of mates. I feel comfortable in the middle of a gang, not being alone with one other person. I’m not a loner or a leader. I just want to be one of the boys, you know?

Speaker В

I’m really careful when it comes to choosing friends. I’ve had some bad experiences in the past — been let down, you know — and now it takes me a while to gain enough confidence in a person to call them a friend.

I don’t want to be disappointed in anyone, so I suppose I am hard to get to know. I think I am a good friend, though, even if it’s not easy for me to put my faith in someone.

SpeakerC

I do have friends, but I don’t see them every day. And I wouldn’t want to! They know what I’m like and they put up with me, maybe more than I deserve, actually! Don’t get me wrong, I like my friends, it’s just that sometimes I prefer my own company. For example, I’m never happier than when I’m on my own at home listening to music or reading a book. And I never get lonely, even if I’m on my own for a long time.

SpeakerD

Well, a few years ago I moved away from my home town — a long way away. I had a young family and a new job, and I suppose life got ahead of me… the next time I looked, there were fewer people around me and my life was just family and work. My friends had drifted away because I was so busy doing other things, and I found it hard to make new friends for the same reason — I was just too busy. It’s a shame.

SpeakerE

I’ve just started university, and you have to move quickly at uni — socially, I mean — because it could be really important, now and in the future. It doesn’t matter if you make some bad choices, you just have to meet as many people as you can so you can get a good social life going. Joining groups and clubs and societies is a great way to find some friends. I’ve met hundreds of people already!

Hi, Basil. How are you? Have you heard the great news?

Hi, Polly. No, what’s up?

You know the school play is coming up in a couple of months? Well, I’ve got a great part — they just told me!

Great! I heard they were casting today.

What part did you go for?

Well, that’s just it. Mr Williams held the auditions last week and everyone tried out for the parts they wanted.

Yes, he asked me to audition for Romeo, but I couldn’t go. I don’t think I’m a performer anyway.

Well, he and the other drama teacher were there last week, and I tried out for the part of the Nurse, who is like Juliet’s servant.

We did a little scene with her and Juliet where she’s helping her get dressed.

That’s a really good part with some great lines. Right, but I didn’t get it. They gave me the lead instead! I’m Juliet!

Well done! That’s great!

I know — I’m really surprised. I didn’t even want it, but they insisted. Now I have to learn all the lines.

It’s a really important character — I mean, the play is called ‘Romeo and Juliet’! I suppose there are more lines for Juliet than the Nurse?

Yes, she speaks a lot more. She even has some scenes where she’s on her own on stage and that’s quite a lot to remember, when everyone’s looking just at you.

You’ll be fine. I’m taking part in the play too, and I’ll be there to support you.

What are you doing? You said you didn’t go to the audition.

No, I’m a stagehand — you know, helping out with the scenery, backstage work. Everything’s nearly ready, actually. We painted the scenery yesterday.

Did you have to make a lot of things for the play?

Just some chairs and tables, really. The hardest thing was making the balcony, but Mr Kelly let us use the woodwork room after school, and Mr Williams helped us with the plans.

Great, well, now we just have to rehearse it all together. The first rehearsal is tonight, isn’t it? Yes, but it wont be a dress rehearsal, because the costumes aren’t finished yet.

Oh, that’s right. The sewing class said they’ll have everything done by next week. I wonder what they’ll make for me to wear?

I think your lines are more important than what you wear, don’t you?

I suppose so! I’d better go and start learning my part! Bye!

Bye!

Hi Barry,

It was nice to hear from you. Your walking holiday sounds really good fun!

You’ll need some warm clothes, because although it can be hot in the day, the nights can be cold. I suggest taking a hat, too, and a coat in case it rains. I don’t think it will snow at this time of year, so you wont need any gloves. Take some sunglasses and sun — cream because the sun is really strong in the mountains. You’ll also need a good compass and water bottle. Don’t try to walk too far at first. You might hurt yourself if you do too much. Just go a few kilometres on the first day.

Have a great holiday!

Svetlana

В4-В12

I think it’s really important to learn to drive a car, whether you live in a city or the country. You need to be able to travel quickly from one place to another. Some people drive to work, and some people’s job is driving, like a lorry-driver or a salesman. If you can drive, you can also go on some interesting holidays.

Task 1 sample answer:

I think it is important to meet people from other countries. You can understand that there are different people with different languages and customs, and that your country is not the only place in the world. It is like travelling in that way.

You can learn a lot from a foreigner. They can teach you their language, and they can show you some new things you never knew before, like food or clothes or music.

It’s important to experience different things or you won’t learn about the world. It is getting smaller all the time, with travel and the internet, so you need to know about foreign culture these days.

I haven’t met many foreigners, but I have met a few. Some teenagers from England came to our school last year on a school trip. That was very interesting! We asked them lots of questions about the UK, and they asked us lots of questions about Russia. I’d like to go to the UK to meet some British people there.

Do you think people are the same all over the world?

Yes, I do. There are differences, of course. People dress differently, and listen to different kinds of music.

But everyone likes music, and everyone has a family, and likes laughing and having friends. We’re all the same really, I think!

What is the best way to meet people from other countries?

Well, you can meet people on the internet, and that’s sometimes interesting, but I think that travelling is actually the best way to meet people from other countries. If you go to another country, try to talk to as many locals as possible. They’re usually very friendly, and you’ll learn a lot!

1. Do you think people are the same all over the world?

2. What is the best way to meet people from other countries?

Sample conversation

(S — Student; I = Interlocutor)

Hi John/Joanna.

Hello, how are you?

I’m fine, thanks. Td like to ask you something about that new bookshop in town. Do you know the one I mean?

Oh, yes, I know the one.

I need to buy a book on science, and I wanted to know if it has any books like that.

Oh, I see. Yes, they have a science section. What do you want the book for?

I need it to do a science project I’m working on.

That sounds interesting. I did a science project at school about different trees and plants. Is yours about that?

No, it’s about space travel. We have to calculate how long it would take to travel to different parts of the universe, so I need to know how far it is to the different planets.

Interesting! I have a great documentary on DVD about space travel. Maybe you’d like to come over to my house and watch it together tonight?

Oh, sorry, I can’t tonight because I have a music lesson.

Oh, OK.

Would you like to bring it over to my house at the weekend and we can watch it then?

Yes, sure, that’s sounds like a good idea.

OK, great. See you at the weekend, then.

OK, bye.
