Dialogue A

A: How can I help you?

B: Well, my car’s broken down — about a mile from here.

A: Right. Do you know what the problem is?

B: I’m not sure. I think it’s the engine. I was driving along and it suddenly just stopped. It’s got lots of petrol in it, so it’s not that.

A: OK — let’s go and take a look. Why didn’t you call me instead of walking all the way here?

Dialogue В

A: How long till Stephen arrives?

B: I just checked the timetable near the ticket office.

It says it gets in around 8 pm. Platform 3.

A: OK, so 15 more minutes then.

B: Unless it’s delayed. They’re doing a lot of work on the track at the moment, so you never know.

Dialogue C

A: When is the guest arriving?

B; We’ve told her to be here by half past ten.

A: But the programme starts at ten thirty! She’s not going to have enough time to get ready.

B: Relax. It’s OK. We won’t be interviewing her until after eleven, so there’s plenty of time.

Dialogue D

A: Excuse me, I wonder if you’ve got any information about package holidays in Turkey.

B: Yes, of course. Take a seat. When are you thinking of going?

A: In the summer. July or August.

B: Lovely. And is it just you, or are you taking the family?

A: Me and a couple of friends, actually. We thought we deserved a break!

I know a lot about homes because my dad is a builder. I’ve been with him to quite a few building sites. He says that most people want homes that use less energy.

One reason is it’s a way to pay less for gas, electricity or heating fuel. With homes being so expensive, it’s a useful way to save money later. But using less energy is also better for the environment, and many people want these kinds of homes for that reason.

Speaker В

My family recently decided to move into the house where my mum grew up. It’s a big house. My grandparents couldn’t take care of it, so they’ve moved into something smaller. But my mum didn’t want to it to be sold to strangers, so we bought it. My mum and dad are happy — they were tired of city life. There’s not a whole lot to see from the house — just some low hills — but there’s a forest nearby and it’s close to a farm as well.

SpeakerC

1 have the best of both worlds where I live. We live in the city, but across the street from my house is a terrific park with lots of trees. It’s almost like not living in the city at all. You can see the park from our living room, which is much better than if we were looking at some other persons home. I think it also makes our house cooler in the summer.

SpeakerD

My parents and I took part in a really cool project last weekend. There were about 40 of us there, all from the neighbourhood, and all volunteers working without pay so that a poor family could have a new home. My dad showed me how to put up walls and where electric wires go. We’re still a long way from finishing, but it’s a great learning experience, and we plan to work every weekend until it’s done.

SpeakerE

My home was built 100 years ago by my great — grandparents. They built it on the edge of the town, which has since grown around it, so now it’s in the suburbs. The wood used to make the home actually came from trees they cut down in a nearby forest. Of course, no one does that any more, and Tm happy about that. But it’s interesting to live in a home built by my own relatives.

How’s it going, Jessica?

Great, Nathan. I was just about to go shopping. Tm going to a wedding on Saturday and I need a new dress.

Oh, what a coincidence. I went to my cousin’s wedding two weeks ago. Luckily, I already had a suit.

Well, to be honest, I do have some new dresses, but none of them are formal enough. I haven’t got any formal clothes that fit.

You don’t look like you’ve put on weight.

How come they don’t fit?

They’re from when I was much younger.

Well, it’ll be fun to look for a new dress.

Really? Tm not looking forward to it.

Tm terrible when it comes to buying fancy clothes. I can never make a decision.

Nathan: Perhaps it’s a good idea to look for brandnames that everyone’s heard of.

Tm hard to please, though. You know, just because something is expensive or the latest fashion doesn’t mean I’ll like it.

Maybe someone could go with you. Not me — I can’t choose dressesl

My sister’s meeting me at the shopping centre a little later. Hopefully she can help. She’s great at picking out clothes for herself. I might just go with what she chooses.

How much do you want to spend?

Up to 200 pounds. My mum’s paying for it.

If I can find something less expensive, I will.

Then maybe my mum will let me use the rest of the money for something I’d rather buy!

Like more clothes?

Actually, Tm interested in this ring I saw yesterday. Tm more into jewellery and accessories these days than clothes.

Nathan: That sounds great. I bought this watch recently because my old one stopped working. I was glad, though, because Td had it for years. I was just waiting for it to break!

Jessica: You don’t need to wear something out to buy another one. You don’t need any reason at all!

I guess, but I didn’t see the need to have two watches. I’d say it’s OK to have more than one pair of shoes, or more than one belt. But watches?

Now that you mention it. I’ve only got one watch as well.

See — I bet if we asked other people, we’d find that most people only own one watch.

That’s an interesting thought. Speaking of time. I’d better get going!

Good luck with your shopping.

Thanks!

Hi David,

Thanks for your letter, I’m excited about the summer as well! Here’s my idea for an interesting hobby.

The hobby I would suggest is doing jigsaw puzzles. It’s a fun hobby that can challenge your mind, but it’s not too difficult to do. You also have a nice picture after you finish. The amount of time it takes to do depends on how many pieces there are. I think it’s a great hobby to do with a friend, and that way it would also take less time to complete.

Well, that’s my suggestion about summer hobbies.

I hope you enjoy whatever you decide to do!

Bye for now, Viktor

I would like to visit a foreign country like the UK because I think it would be a great experience to learn about a new culture and see amazing sights. I also think it would be interesting to learn another language and eat different food.

Task 1 sample answer:

National holidays are days when the people of a country celebrate a day that’s important in the country’s history. There are national holidays that celebrate the birth of a country, and there are those that celebrate birthdays of important people. Businesses are usually closed and people have a day off from work on national holidays. Often, there are celebrations in town, such as parades and firework displays. I prefer going out and watching a parade or the fireworks because it’s a chance to celebrate with other people add have some fun. Staying at home can be a bit boring.

Should everyone have the day off for national holidays?

No, because if everyone had the day off for national holidays, the country may have problems with things like transport and energy. Someone has to drive the bus that takes us to the parade! Also, if someone wants to work on a national holiday, such as a shop owner, they should be able to work.

Are national holidays and religious holidays ever the same?

Yes, holidays like Christmas and Easter are also national holidays, because many people in the country celebrate these holidays and people usually have the day off from work.

Sample conversation

(S = Student; I = Interlocutor)

Hi, Stephen/Stephanie.

Hello!

I need to ask a favour. Can I borrow your mobile phone to make a short call?

Of course. Is there something wrong with yours?

The battery’s run out, and I have to call my friend and arrange to meet outside school after lessons.

I see. There’s nothing wrong, is there?

No, not at all — we want to go to the local rowing club and register for classes.

Ah, rowing. That sounds interesting. What goes on in the class?

It’s a basic course. You train with a group of people in a single boat, and you have a trainer that tells you how to row.

Sounds like fun! How long is the class?

It’s three hours a week for six weeks. Then we can either row on our own or with a partner.

Do you have to take the class to be able to row?

I don’t think so, but I think it’s a good idea.

By the way, why don’t you and your friend meet me for a coffee when you’ve finished at the rowing club?

Good idea — thanks. Listen, would you be interested in learning to row?

Yes, I would, actually.

Super! lhe three of us can all go along and register together.

OK, that sounds wonderful.

So, I’ll call my friend now.

Great!
