Dialogue A

A: Table 7 has just sent this back. The customer claims the meat is undercooked.

B: What? Wasn’t the order for medium rare?

A: Yes, but the customer said it was too rare and would like it cooked properly.

B: Oh, for goodness’ sake. If people knew what they wanted in the first place. I’d cook it!

Dialogue В

A; Susan, have seen that email Mr Tyler sent everyone this morning?

B: I know. It’s ridiculous, isn’t it? I mean, why can’t we have lunch at our desks?

A: It’s not like there are customers coming in.

There’s only us here.

B: It’s crazy. I like to work and eat at the same time, otherwise I don’t get everything done by 5 o’clock.

Dialogue C

A: So, what’s the problem with little Cassie today?

B: Well, she just hasn’t got any energy. Look at her.

She’s just sitting there. Normally she’s running around, playing and causing trouble! It’s been like this for three days now.

A: Right. Have you changed her food recently? Or has something else changed at home? Cats often don’t like things changing.

A: No, I don’t think so.

B: OK — let me check her temperature. Can you hold her for me?

Dialogue D

A: Can I ask who it’s for and what the special occasion is?

B: Well, It’s for my niece’s 12th birthday. What would be suitable for a girl that age?

A; How about one of these musical jewellery boxes? They’re very popular.

B: How pretty! Yes, it’s perfect. I’ll have one of those necklaces to put in it, too.

Being a mum has so many different stages. The early years are really physically tiring. Babies and toddlers are a lot of hard work. Things get easier when they start school and you’ve got those lovely years when you watch them growing up. Young children are so much fun.

The teenage years can be a bit difidcult, but teenagers are great company when they’re in a good mood. Now my three are all at university. I miss them when they’re not here.

It’s quite normal to he an only child in China, and no one feels sorry for you if you don’t have brothers and sisters. I certainly wasn’t lonely as a child, because I always had friends round to my house and my cousins live close by. The only thing I don’t like about being an only child is that it does put you underpressure. My parents expect a lot from me and have very high hopes about my future.

Being a sailor — I’m a merchant seaman — has both advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, I earn good money and my wife and children don’t need to worry about anything. But I have to spend long periods away from home. I really miss seeing my kids. I miss out on lots of family events, too. It’s especially hard if I’m at sea when one of the kids has a birthday. But I try to make up for it when I’m home.

I really love the fact that I come from an extended family. Some of my friends at school hardly ever get to see their grandparents or other relatives, but I see nearly all my relatives every day, as we all live in the same block of flats. I cant imagine what it would be like if it was just me and my sister, and Mum and Dad. Life would be so quiet.

I’m still single but I’d like to get married one day and start a family. But before I settle down I want to establish my career. I think it can be very difficult to find time for family life in the first few years of a career. Once I have a good job and I’m in a better position financially. I’ll start thinking about getting married. I don’t think it’s a good idea to get married too young, anyway.

Good afternoon, Lizzy — so you’ve finally made it to school. Did you decide you needed some extra sleep?

I’d never deliberately miss the school bus, Clive. I had terrible toothache all night, and I went to the dentist’s this morning.

Sorry. You poor thing! That must have been awful. What did the dentist say?

He’s given me some tablets and I’ll have to go back next week. Hopefully it’ll stop hurting in a couple of days.

Well, we’ve got that Science field trip tomorrow. That should cheer you up.

Td completely forgotten about that!

Did Mr lameson give you the instructions this morning?

Yes, and I have all the details. You might want to write them down.

OK. Let’s go sit on the grass over there.

First things first. Clothing. You’ll need waterproof trousers and a pair of waterproof boots.

Oh, my waterproof trousers are ripped.

I’ll have to buy a new pair.

I’ve got a spare pair. They’ll be a bit big, but they’ll do the job. Have you got a bucket?

Yes, I’ve got a bucket, and a net for catching insects and tadpoles. What about sample jars? Mr lameson is bringing those, and some spare nets for anyone who doesn’t have one.

OK. That means less to carry. Did he say where we’re going this time, or is he keeping it a surprise again?

Were going to Marton to collect specimens.

It’ll be a really great day out, as long as it doesn’t rain.

Yes, I love it there. It’s so beautiful. But I’m not so sure the weather will stay fine.

The forecast says sunny! I want to have a picnic. My mum’s made some great picnic treats. Wait until you see her cherry pie.

I’m bringing a cooler box full of things to eat.

Oh, lovely. I’ll make some egg mayonnaise and a vegetable dip to bring as well, if you like.

Yes, please. And one more thing to remember is your Science notebook. We need to keep records of all the specimens and conditions.

Don’t worry! I’ll make sure I’ve got everything we need, all packed up and ready, before I go to bed. Well, it’ll be an early start. We have to be at the school gate at 8 o’clock. Do you want me to pick you up on my way?

I’m going to set my alarm for 7am — bright and early. And my dad will give me a lift. I’ll be at the gate by 7.45.

Great. Everything’s organised, then.

Yes, I can’t wait. I’m already excited.

July 2013

Hi Abigail,

Thanks for your letter. It was lovely to hear from you!

I hope you’re looking forward to your summer holiday. I’m glad you’ve decided to come to Russia! I’ve never been to Sochi but I do know some things about it. As you said, it’s on the coast so it’s great for swimming. There are some lovely beaches, I believe. If you enjoy walking, then the mountains near the town are beautiful.

You’ll need a sun hat and sun cream for swimming. Take some walking boots if you want to go walking in the mountains. You asked about the food. I don’t recommend eating food from people in the street, but in restaurants and hotels it should be very nice.

I hope you have a fantastic time. Send me a postcard!

Best wishes,

Valeriya

Task 1 sample answer:

People go to university after they leave school so they can continue their education. At university, you only usually study one or two subjects, so you can go into much more detail.

I personally don’t want to go to university because I don’t like studying! I’d rather get a job when I leave school and start earning money.

I think that there are good reasons to take a year out before going to university. It’s nice to have a bit of a holiday after important school exams, and you can learn things about the world and yourself which will help you at university.

What problems do some students have at university?

Some students go to university and they’ve never lived away from home before. This can be very difficult. They have to learn to do everything for themselves — preparing food to eat, tidying up, buying clothes. Some people love the freedom, but others don’t know what to do at all!

Why do so many people leave education at an early age?

Education isn’t for everyone. Some people prefer to work and earn money. I don’t think it’s a problem that lots of people leave school at an early age and don’t go to university. Some people like learning and some people like doing!

Sample conversation

(S = Student; I = Interlocutor)

Hi there, Carl/Carla. How are you?

Hello. I’m fine thanks. You?

Great. Someone told me you have a map of the local area. Do you think I could borrow it for the weekend?

Sure, be my guest. Here you go.

Wonderful! Thank you so much.

Do you need it for a particular reason?

Yes. I’m going hiking in the countryside this weekend and I need a good map.

Oh, that sounds very nice. What part are you going to go walking in?

We’re going to go to the hills to the west of here.

Is that a nice place to visit, then?

Well, I think anywhere round here is nice to visit.

But the hills have got lots of walking paths, and there’s a lake that’s supposed to be very pretty.

It sounds like it will be a very nice trip. Have you ever been there before?

Not to the lake, but I’ve visited the hills.

I haven’t been there at all yet. Oh, would you like to share these sandwiches? There’s no way I can eat them all myself.

No thanks. I’ve just had a big lunch. Have you got any plans for this weekend yet?

Not yet, no.

Why don’t you come on the trip with me and my friends, then?

I’d love to join you if there’s room for me to come along.

Of course there is. You just need some walking shoes.

Thanks. That sounds great!
