A gardener might want to make a simple design with a tree or plant in their garden, such as a circle or an arch. More complicated structures could be fences, tunnels, or ladders.

B. It’s best to start tree shaping when the plant is really young. One way to shape a young tree is to move its trunk into a particular place and fasten it there until it can one day hold the shape on its own. He kept his methods a secret and when he was asked about how he did it, he would simply say, “I talk to them.” Today, people travel from all over the country to see them.

E. Tree shapers have created some amazing things from their trees. One man created a series of trees that look like people. The trunks form their bodies and heads and their arms are branches sticking straight up, with leaves growing some metres above them. Other tree shapers have created playground equipment for children to play on, signs within the trunks of trees, and large frames for mirrors and pictures.

The UK is in the far north of the Northern Hemisphere, on the same line as Canada and Russia. Because of this, you’d think it would be extremely cold in the winter. While it does have cold winters, tliey are nothing like the extreme Canadian or Russian winters. Why is this?

The UK is in a fortunate position. It is situated at the north-east end of the Atlantic Ocean. This ocean has a warm body of water flowing through it called the North Atlantic Current. This current is fed by the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The air above this current is warm as well, which means that warm, tropical air is being pushed up to the UK by this stream.

By the time the air reaches the UK, it has cooled down quite a lot. However, it is still much warmer than air that comes down from the Arctic and spreads over Canada and Russia. It is this Arctic air that makes those two places very cold in the winter, with temperatures well below freezing for weeks. It brings several metres of snow as well. With the North Atlantic Current preventing the Arctic air from hitting the UK, the country escapes these terrible winters.

The North Atlantic Current has such a powerful effect on the UK’s climate that without it, temperatures in winter would be 10 degrees Celsius cooler. In parts of the UK closest to where the current meets land, palm trees can actually grow. At the same position in Canada, polar bears live in their natural habitat.

These warm ocean currents also bring a fair amount of rain. As the moist air from the tropics meets cooler air over the UK, rainfall occurs. This leads to other weather phenomena as well, such as thick fog and grey, cloudy skies that last for days.

The further away you get from the parts of the country that directly face the North Atlantic Current, the less the effects are seen. South-west England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland receive heavy amounts of rain, but London, in the country’s east, receives only 650 ml a year. That’s less than Rome or New York City. Compare that to the west, which can receive up to 4,500 ml of rain per year, and you can see the dramatic effect the current has on weather. As the western UK is quite mountainous, these high lands tend to block the rain from reaching the east.

In terms of hot weather, the UK does not have many heatwaves. Its position in the north means high temperatures don’t happen often. Its average highs are in the low 20s in the summer, but the highest temperature ever recorded was 38.5 degrees Celsius, in Faversham, Kent, in the south-east of England.

There are similarities between Canada’s and Russia’s winters.
