Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was one of the greatest Russian composers. His work had a great effect on the development of western music during his lifetime and after his death.

Rimsky-Korsakov was born into a wealthy family in 1844 in Tikhvin. He showed an aptitude for music even when young, enjoying Russian folk songs and religious music. Despite this early talent, he decided to enter the naval college at St Petersburg, where his brother had gone before him, and he later joined the Russian Navy.

During this period he met Mily Balakirev, a pianist and composer, who encouraged him to develop his talent in music further. Balakirev was also important in the career of another great Russian composer, Tchaikovsky, and was instrumental in the direction Russian music would take in the late 18th century.

When he wasn’t away at sea, Rimsky-Korsakov had lessons with Balakirev on how to compose music. He completed his first symphony while on a ship. Through his teacher, he was introduced to other musicians and composers, and became an important member of‘The Five’, or ‘The Mighty Handful’, a talented group headed by Balakirev which also included musicians such as Mussorgsky and Borodin. When Mussorgsky died, Rimsky-Korsakov completed some of his unfinished musical pieces, and his arrangement of‘Night on Bald Mountain’ is the one generally performed to this day.

Rimsky-Korsakov’s musical education, including a period of intense self-study, was extremely different to the normal classical education at the Conservatories, or music schools. Because of this, some people said that he was somehow more authentic, and closer to Russian culture. Certainly, his successful use of Russian folk music traditions in his classical music shows his love of Russian culture.

Despite his unusual education, in 1871 Rimsky-Korsakov was appointed Professor of Composition at the St Petersburg Conservatory. His students included Prokofiev and Stravinsky, two more great names of Russian music, and he continued to write and compose operas, chamber, choral and orchestral music. Perhaps his most famous piece is ‘Flight of the Bumblebee’ from the opera ‘The Tale of Tsar Saltan’.

Rimsky-Korsakov died in 1908. In 1944, the St Petersburg Conservatory was renamed the N. A. Rimsky — Korsakov Saint Petersburg State Conservatory in his honour. Today, Rimsky-Korsakov is still remembered and admired, as a composer, orchestrator and educator, but most importantly, as one of the outstanding figures in the creation of Russian classical music.
