Europa is one of the four largest moons of the planet Jupiter. It is the sixth largest moon in the solar system, just slightly smaller than Earths. Covered in thick ice, it is an interesting moon for scientists to study. Some of them believe humans should one day visit it in search of life. What makes Europa so important?

The moon’s icy crust is made of water, which is a necessary ingredient for life. While the surface of the moon is far too cold for life to exist, scientists believe that there is a layer of liquid water beneath the frozen surface. Deep inside most planets — and some moons — is energy that generates heat. This could be happening on Europa, which would melt the ice closer to the inside of the planet. And where there’s water and heat, there could possibly be life.

Because of this possibility, some scientists would like to send some equipment to Europa to prove, or disprove, this theory. This equipment would have to break through the surface to reach the liquid lake or ocean below. Once there, it could release a smaller object capable of travelling through water and collecting data. The cost of building and sending equipment like this through hundreds of millions of kilometres of space would be extremely high. Other, less costly space missions are being carried out first.

To explore how scientists think life could exist there — in a place not just cold, but extremely dark — they look at the Earth’s oceans. Deep below the surface, there are life forms that survive independently from sunlight, a fact scientists once thought was impossible. At the bottom of the sea, there are volcano-like openings that produce heat. Near these openings live giant worms, clams and other types of sea life. They eat tiny bacteria that live off elements produced by the openings. It’s almost like an independent world down thejf, and almost completely dark. If something like this can exist on Earth, perhaps it could exist on Europa.

Besides water, oxygen is another necessary substance for life. In 1995, the Hubble Space Telescope confirmed that the atmosphere of Europa, although very thin, contains oxygen. The ice on the moon’s surface can absorb this oxygen. Scientists believe that the oxygen-filled ice could sink into the ocean below the surface. In this way, Europa’s watery layer might contain oxygen.

While there are many theories about Europa, it has been shown that water and oxygen are present. This is a bigger discovery than anything found so far on Earth’s own moon or the planet Mars. With advances in technology, we may discover even more things about Europa from here on Earth.
