Over the years.

He has done various TV cookery shows, teaching viewers how to cook food which is quite simple, but still and

Jamie Oliver always appears to be such a friendly person. Some TV chefs, on the other hand, seem to try to be as as possible.

I think they want viewers to them,

Perhaps because hating them actually makes people keep watching their TV shows.

A lifetime of learning Independence and responsibility Learning rather than playing The highest level of education

A. Education is a process which can occupy us for most of our lives. It teaches us what we need ’ know, and prepares us for a life beyond the classroom. It continues as we get older after we leave < classroom, and it never really stops. We learn not only facts and information, but also the necessa skills to become a useful member of society.

B. Children usually begin their education with ‘pre-school’ classes at the age of 3 or 4. This might sec too young for some children to be away from their parents, but separation has to happen at some pon School is the main environment where a child must learn to act as an individual, and the break has^ be made sooner or later.

C. Junior school is where a child encounters formal education for the first time, and the teacher Va

Actually teach rather than control the kids’ playing. This first major change in the nature of educatia is the basis of learning to gain knowledge — learning how to learn — as the child realises school is aba, much more than simply fun and games. J

D. High school, for teenagers, is where it gets serious. So many changes, so many important things to tai into account — exams, friends, appearance — so many choices! What’s worse, failure can have extrem^ serious effects on a student’s future. Students who don’t get down to some serious study and pass the exams will probably not like the consequences.

E. At university, things change again. A student often leaves home for the first time to go to universe and suddenly, there are problems — like cooking your own food — that have to be solved. The student’ on their own, and has to deal with it. They have earned their freedom, but now they have to live up ( the challenge.

E And after university, what then? Some people continue their studies to earn a Master’s degree or ev« a Doctorate, but this level of education is extremely difficult and only a few people have the necessai skills. Many post-graduate students become academics, and their lives follow a familiar student-teachi path.

G. Even if someone feels they didn’t achieve all they could have done in their school life, we must rememb that age is no barrier to learning. Many people nowadays return to education in their later years I complete their studies, or gain further professional qualifications, or merely to learn something nei Mature students bring something new to the classroom, as well as their ‘wise old heads’.

Tetris is a computer game invented in 1984 by the Russian mathematician and computer engineer Alexey Pajitnov. It is one of the most popular and easily-recognisable video games in the world. The name comes from a combination of the Greek word ‘tetrad which means ‘four’ (because aU the coloured blocks in the game consist of four squares, joined in different ways to make various shapes), and Pajitnov’s favourite sport, tennis.

The game itself seems quite simple at first sight. Different shapes fall from the top to the bottom of the screen, and the player must turn them and move them so as to make a horizontal line of ten blocks with no gaps. If the player does this, the line will disappear, leaving room for the next blocks. The player moves through levels of increasing difficulty, with the blocks dropping faster and faster, until they reach the top of the screen, so no new blocks can fall and the game ends.

Does it sound simple? Maybe, but its simplicity hasn’t limited its popularity. Tetris was the first video game to be exported from Russia to the USA, marking the beginning of a trend that now sees Russia as a leader in the video game industry. Tetris was the forerunner and perhaps the greatest of them all. It is still used today to teach computer science students how to program.

In 2007, the game review site IGN placed Tetris at number two on its list of the 100 greatest video games of all time. The first Tetris world championships were held three years later. Ihe game also holds two Guinness World Records for its commercial success.

The Russian origin of the game is shown by the music heard in the background as the game progresses. The music is actually a melody from a Russian folk song based on an 1861 poem by Nikolai Nekrasov called ‘Korobeiniki’, or ‘The Peddlers’. This is the first of three poems he wrote about Russian peasants. Peddlers were travelling salesmen who walked from village to village selling things such as cloth, books and other small items, and the poem concerns the tragic love story between a peddler and a beautiful peasant girl.

There is a strange contrast between the game’s bright colours and light-hearted graphics and the sad end to the original poem. The song itself ends happily, but the poem ends with the peddler being murdered before he can return to his love. The song is only the beginning of the poem, and covers the start of their romance but not its tragic end. Tetris players are usually unaware of this sad tale as they happily play with the falling coloured blocks.

Humans have always been fascinated by the idea of living to a great age. There have been many legends and tales throughout history about people who were very old. The Old Testament of the Bible claims that the oldest person ever was Methuselah, who, it is said, lived to be 969 years of age.

In the past, living to a very old age was quite an amazing achievement. There was little to no health care, and no antibiotics or other reliable medicines. Infant mortality (that is, the number of babies and small children who die) was very high, and many children did not live to become adults. As a result, those who managed to live to a great age were usually shown a lot of respect.

Although many people have made claims about reaching ages of well over a hundred, it has often been difficult to prove their claims, because of poor record-keeping and lack of proper birth certificates. In some cases, it has been shown that the lives of two people with the same name — for instance, a father and son — have been claimed as the long life of only one person.

Some parts of the world, such as Ikaria in Greece and Okinawa in Japan, have been shown to have an unusually high percentage of people reaching the age of 90 and over. There are many theories as to what causes this. Firstly, and most importantly, it is a matter of genetics. If your parents or grandparents lived long lives, then your chances of doing the same are much greater. Other things that make a difference are thought to be diet, lifestyle, and strong social and family ties.

There are still parts of the world where life expectancy — how long the average person can expect to live — is as low as around 40. However, in most countries in the developed world, life expectancy is in the late 70s for men and early 80s for women. Research suggests that life expectancy will increase in the future, and many more people will live to be over a hundred. Some scientists claim that life expectancy will always continue to climb, and may never reach an upper limit that cannot be passed. Perhaps one day people will live as long as Methuselah.

In the meantime, those who would like to live a long life should follow some basic rules. Try to lead as stress-free a life as you can. Eat a diet that is rich in plant-based foods. Take regular exercise and be as active as possible for your whole life. Have a family and most of all, enjoy your life. Happy people live longer.

As a young child, I used to help my grandmother in the kitchen. That’s when I first became interested in

I loved the of being part of a team working

Together in the kitchen, as well as handling, tasting and smelling the food.

Baking was always one of the most difficult things to get right. All the ingredients have to be weighed

There was nothing or strange about the type

Of food I learned to cook with my gran. It was just old-fashioned, home-cooked food.

Nowadays, I cook food that is a bit more adventurous, but my gran taught me all the skills I need.

Through her patience and her teaching, she made sure that I learned how to be a good all-round home cook.
